We led the national evaluation of Free Bikes schemes, which provide bikes, helmets, locks, lessons and community-led rides to people living in areas of deprivation. Our evaluation demonstrated how these schemes drive lifechanging benefits by transforming access to jobs, training, social activities and social infrastructure. We quantified wellbeing improvements using WELLBY monetisation and supported the findings with powerful personal testimonials. Working alongside Imperial College, we extended existing health impact assessment models to reflect tangible NHS cost savings from disease prevention, aligned with the preventative health policy agenda. Our work is helping to build the case for investment in the schemes as a transformative initiative to reduce inequalities in health, economic opportunities and social mobility across the country.
