We supported Trinity College in making the economic case for Cambridge Science Park North (CSPN), a proposed extension to the original Cambridge Science Park. This application would require release of green belt land and hence Volterra were tasked with justifying very special circumstances for release on economic grounds. The vision was to create a world-leading hub for mid-tech — a high-productivity, export-intensive sector. We demonstrated unmet demand for hybrid research, lab, and industrial space using a cluster-based spatial analysis, highlighting the area’s existing mid-tech strength. Our place-based approach quantified economic, social, and environmental benefits, including inclusive job creation near areas of deprivation. Our work provided the strategic rationale for CSPN.
