Lucy Dean and Alex O’Byrne were recently invited to speak at the 15th Annual Transport Practitioners Meeting (TPM) in Nottingham. TPM is the annual meeting place for all transport planners, highway engineers and urban transport designers. Practitioners, policy makers and academics are invited to present topical papers over the two days.
Lucy’s presentation ‘What might the future of transport look like?’, was an insight into the implications of future transport changes for economic development. Acknowledging the difficulty of predicting the future, Lucy gave examples of two potential new transport technologies: Autonomous Vehicles and Hyperloop.
Alex presented his paper, ‘Economics and Cycling’, which looked at current methods to appraising cycling schemes. He argued that whilst it is easy to value the costs associated with cycling, the methods for valuing the benefits are less well established. Alex discussed current appraisal methodologies, the issues with appraisal and the need to develop these to ensure that cycling projects are assessed consistently with other modes.
