North East Economic review Published and another Newsnight appearance

As mentioned in February's newsletter Volterra Senior Partner Bridget Rosewell is a member of an independent Review Team (led by Lord Andrew Adonis) for the North East Economic Review. The team has now published their report on achieving more and better jobs and a better quality of life in the North East. The report is based on a wide range of evidence, local knowledge and experience alongside expert think pieces to develop their recommendations. The Review has taken a broad approach to considering how to best drive economic growth over the next twenty years. Read more about the report here or read it in full here. Bridget also made a Newsnight appearance this month - giving the North East perspective in light of the review on whether or not the UK is looking towards a financial upturn.
Providing the Right Skills for the Right Job: GLA Report Published

Providing the Right Skills for the Right Job: GLA Report Published

The report that we carried out earlier this year for the London Enterprise Panel on the skills that are currently required in London is now available to view here. The report compares these skill requirements to the education offering currently available in London by further education colleges, universities, and other private providers. As part of the project we spoke to key employers and a sample of education providers, carried out employment and skills forecasts for London, and provided the GLA with recommendations on how more Londoners, and in particular those from more disadvantaged backgrounds, could better access the London labour market. The findings were well received and were used as an impetus for a change in the capital’s educational offering.

A report led by Volterra associate Professor Nick Bosanquet was recently published and featured in the Primary Care Respiratory Journal. The research paper reviews and compares methods currently employed in the research and treatment of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) in a number of target regions and countries. The paper reviews the evidence on programme development and the effectiveness gap between health outcomes in the UK, France, Germany, and Finland. The results show the need for more specific programmes in primary care in order to close this effectiveness gap. Such a programme should aim to target and prevent the downward spiral for high–risk patients. Read the report here.

Bridget sits on TfL panel looking at the criteria for aviation policy in the South East

A recent development in the Mayor’s campaign to ensure London has the aviation connectivity to meet its future economic needs has seen the publication of a set of criteria against which Transport for London will assess options for increasing aviation capacity. These cover the six categories of economic, airport infrastructure, airspace, surface access, environmental impacts and deliverability. The publication is a result of a public consultation led by TfL where Volterra’s senior partner Bridget Rosewell was a member of the panel. Read the report here.

Volterra Partner Paul Ormerod had a flying, two day visit to the Alibaba Business School in Hangzhou, China. Alibaba are the world’s number one e-commerce company in terms of turnover. This was a follow-up to the workshop held in the Alibaba board room last November. A range of issues related to understanding consumer behaviour in the networked world was discussed by the small number of invited participants. One of the sessions was held in a tea ceremony restaurant directly on the famous West Lake. Paul said ‘It made a nice change, I never even saw the lake last time, I had the impression that Hangzhou was just like Manchester but wetter’.
